Fevzi Shakir
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am applying for the position of Vice President of the BSGE. It has been a privilege to serve on the BSGE Council since 2014, during which time I have contributed across a range of roles and portfolios.
I initially joined Council as the Trainee Representative, where I founded the RIGS resident platform, which has grown substantially over the past decade. I subsequently served on Senior Council, leading the Patient Information portfolio and later overseeing Website and Digital Governance. In this role, I developed the BSGE conference app, enabling the Society’s first paperless ASM, and further modernised the Society’s website.
I was later appointed as an Officer of the Society, serving as Honorary Treasurer. During this time, I successfully registered the Society for VAT, implemented electronic accounting systems with improved transparency and access, and streamlined financial processes. Under this stewardship, the Society has continued to grow its reserves, alongside the introduction of new Rhodium sponsorship packages to further strengthen and enhance BSGE activities.
It would be an absolute honour to serve as Vice President/President of the BSGE. My experience within the Society positions me well to help lead its future direction, with a strong emphasis on surgical innovation, international collaboration, joint meetings, and continued National/International membership growth. This vision is already being realised in the forthcoming London ASM (which I am Chair of), which has an International Theme and is shaping up to be the largest and most ambitious meeting to date.
With kind regards,
Fevzi

My experience as a past Clinical Head of Division at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has given me a broad understanding of the challenges facing gynaecology, including workforce pressures, limited resources, training demands, governance requirements, and increasing waiting times.
BSGE plays a pivotal role in advocating for women, maintaining high standards in gynaecological care, and supporting training through close alignment with the RCOG curriculum. I bring the experience, leadership skills, and strategic insight required to contribute effectively as a Senior Council Member.”
Dorota Hardy
I am a Consultant Gynaecologist and Minimal Access Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Co-Lead of the Leeds Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Centre.
I have a long-standing commitment to the BSGE and currently serve on the BSGE Laparoscopic Training Subcommittee, contributing to national training standards. I organise, run and teach on multiple national laparoscopic, simulation and cadaveric courses. This work is deliberately practical and outcomes-focused, supporting trainees and early-career consultants at key transition points.
I chaired the Local Organising Committee for the BSGE Annual Scientific Meeting in Leeds 2025. This experience reinforced a simple truth: the Society is strongest when centres work collaboratively, and when education and research lead to meaningful change in clinical practice.
I am RCOG College Tutor, NIHR Specialty Research Lead for Yorkshire and Humber, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Leeds. Research is central to my work. My focus is collaborative, multicentre endometriosis research that links surgical outcomes with patient-reported experience and quality-of-life measures. Patient voices must shape how we define success. I am also a member of BSGE subcommittee for research and innovation.
I have a strong interest in the responsible use of technology, including digital platforms and AI, to enhance training, research delivery and patient engagement. I gained first-hand experience of this through organising BSGE ASM Leeds 2025, where clinically led, transparent collaboration with industry was essential.
I care deeply about leadership and mentorship, particularly for women in surgery. Talent should not be limited by access, visibility or sponsorship.
If elected, I will bring a collaborative, delivery-focused approach to Council, supporting the BSGE’s priorities in training, research and inclusive leadership.
Mohamed Mabrouk
Dear colleagues,
I would like to share my wish to stand for election to the Council of the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE), a Society that has long represented the values of excellence, integrity, and shared learning in our specialty.
My professional journey has been guided by a deep commitment to minimally invasive gynaecological surgery and to improving the care of women with complex benign disease, particularly endometriosis. I have been fortunate to work with outstanding teams in the UK and across Europe, helping to develop specialist services and supporting colleagues managing challenging surgical cases.
I currently serve as President of the European Endometriosis League, a role that has reinforced for me the importance of collaboration, careful governance, and respectful dialogue when setting standards of care and training across different healthcare systems. One area especially close to my heart is education. Over the years, I have been actively involved in developing structured training pathways, including the EndoCare pathway for endometriosis, aimed at supporting surgeons through progressive, safe, and transparent skill development rather than isolated procedural exposure.
Alongside my clinical practice, I remain strongly committed to teaching, mentorship, and academic work, believing that the future of our specialty depends on nurturing confident, well-supported surgeons and multidisciplinary teams.
If elected, I would hope to contribute to the BSGE Council with openness, experience, and a genuine desire to serve the Society and its members, while supporting the continued evolution of training, accreditation, and professional collaboration.
Thank you for your time and support.
Suruchi Pandey

By supporting surgeons, nurses, and trainees to develop advanced skills, we future-proof our specialty and raise standards nationally. Advocacy underpins everything I do. Women’s health has historically been under-prioritised, and I am passionate about ensuring equity of access – regardless of case complexity, BMI, or postcode – and about amplifying the voice of clinicians delivering frontline care.
If elected, I will bring energy, strategic thinking, and a proven record of delivery to Council. I will work collaboratively to strengthen research, support members, and ensure the BSGE continues to lead with credibility, compassion, and ambition for women’s health. I would be honoured to represent you and work tirelessly to strengthen the BSGE’s impact, relevance, and leadership.
Sophie Strong
I am standing for Senior Council of the BSGE because I care deeply about the Society’s role in shaping the future of benign gynaecological surgery and improving care for people with endometriosis, fibroids and chronic pelvic pain. I believe my clinical experience, leadership roles and commitment to education allow me to contribute meaningfully at a senior, strategic level.
As a consultant specialising in endometriosis and minimally invasive gynaecological surgery (MIGS) within a BSGE-accredited endometriosis centre, I work daily with patients affected by delayed diagnosis and fragmented care. Leading tertiary pelvic pain clinics and complex MDTs has given me insight into the challenges facing specialist services, and I have actively driven improvements to support timely, patient-centred care. Advocacy for female health underpins my clinical practice, research and teaching, including publications on holistic endometriosis care and the mental health impact of hormonal and hormone-blocking treatments.

Cal Wilson
I am a Consultant Gynaecologist based in York, with a specialist interest in minimal access surgery for complex benign disease, particularly the management of fibroids. I am standing for election to the BSGE Council because I am keen to contribute to the Society’s work and to support the continued development of high-quality gynaecology services across the UK.
Working in the North of England, I see first-hand the challenges faced by services outside major metropolitan areas, including variation in access to advanced laparoscopic surgery and specialist pathways. While these challenges are national, I believe it is important that perspectives from Yorkshire, the North East, and the wider North of England are represented, so that guidance and service development reflect the realities of delivering care across diverse settings.
My clinical practice focuses mostly on complex benign gynaecology, and I have experience developing local service pathways within existing resources. I am a committed trainer, actively supporting colleagues at all stages of their careers to develop advanced surgical skills. Fibroids account for a significant proportion of benign gynaecology workload, yet access to high-quality care remains variable.
The recent RCOG statement on improving fibroid care and the planned introduction of specialist fibroid centres present an important opportunity for the BSGE to lead on standards, training, and service development. I would hope to contribute by sharing practical experience and supporting evidence-based, deliverable approaches to improving services nationally. It would be a privilege to serve on the BSGE Council.
Ghada Badran
I wish to put myself forward for the role of Junior Trainee Representative (ST1-ST4) on the BSGE Council, in accordance with the term outlined in the Society’s Constitution.
I am currently an ST4 trainee in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a strong and growing interest in minimally invasive surgery. My enthusiasm for gynaecological endoscopy began during my early exposure to laparoscopic procedures and has continued to develop through regular engagement with BSGE educational webinars. These experiences have highlighted the essential role the BSGE plays in advancing clinical excellence, delivering high-quality education, and championing trainee development across the UK and Ireland.
If elected, I would be a motivated and committed representative for junior trainees, ensuring their perspectives are actively represented and meaningfully considered at Council level. I am particularly passionate about promoting inclusive, equitable, and accessible training opportunities, especially for trainees working in less-resourced deaneries or those facing personal or professional barriers to course attendance. I would aim to proactively seek trainee feedback to help inform and shape innovative future educational initiatives.
I believe I would be able to contribute positively to the Council’s work and support the BSGE’s core mission of excellence in women’s health. I would be delighted to represent my peers, collaborate with Council members, and play an active role in supporting the continued growth and impact of our Society.
Max Hayden
Having just stepped-up to an ST3 level trainee currently working within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, with a strong interest in benign gynaecology and endoscopic surgery, I see the BSGE as an essential organisation in supporting high-quality training and professional development, and therefore I am very keen to apply for the role of Junior Representative for the Council.
I was a volunteer for the Local Organising Committee for the amazing AGM in Leeds in 2025 and this role provided me with valuable exposure to the Society’s work and really showed the importance of engaging trainees early and meaningfully in their career.
It was wonderful meeting like-minded members of the society from across the country at this great event, and being involved in the organisation of a national meeting highlighted to me the fantastic impact the BSGE has on education, collaboration, and innovation, as well as the value of ensuring trainee voices are represented as much as possible within the Society’s activities and decision-making.
I am passionate about improving trainee engagement with BSGE, especially at junior training levels, where awareness of opportunities available to us can be very variable!
As Junior Representative, I would aim to act as an accessible link between trainees and the Society, helping to promote educational events, research opportunities, and mentorship, while also feeding back trainee perspectives or concerns.
I would love to contribute actively to the Society’s work and to represent all trainees with an interest in minimal-access surgery at a national level. Thank you.
Sina Mathema
I am an ST3 with a strong interest in minimally invasive surgery, and I am applying for the role of BSGE Junior Trainee Representative to ensure the voice of trainees continues to be integrated and central to the Society’s work.
My interest in gynaecological endoscopy has developed through active engagement with the BSGE – ranging from webinars and the Annual Scientific Meeting to hands-on courses. Having completed GESEA Levels 1 and 2 and the Intermediate RIGS programme, I have seen first hand how critical early exposure, high-quality simulation, and supportive mentorship are in building surgical confidence and skill.
Additionally, I have represented trainees on both the Junior Doctors’ Forum and the Regional Trainees Committee, advocating for colleagues and liaising with senior colleagues. These roles strengthened my skills in communication, organisation, teamwork, and problem-solving-capabilities I can bring directly to this position.
I understand the challenges faced by ST1 to ST4 trainees, particularly variability in access to theatre time, mentorship, simulation training and awareness of opportunities within gynaecological endoscopy. I am a strong supporter of simulation initiatives, and I believe in promoting mentorship opportunities that are visible and accessible to all. This is especially important in addressing gender and racial disparities highlighted in recent workforce reports to ensure equitable training opportunities.
If elected, I will be a proactive and approachable link between junior trainees and Council, working to develop and widen equitable access to endoscopic training resources, promote mentorship, and ensure trainee perspectives meaningfully inform the BSGE’s future direction.
Shawn Soares
I am currently an ST3 trainee with a strong and growing interest in benign gynaecology and therefore keen to take on the role of Junior Trainee Representative for the BSGE. In a climate with fewer gynaecological operations than previous generations, I understand the challenges this presents and the importance of optimising surgical training outside of the operating theatre to support the development of trainees. I feel that simulation is an increasingly important tool in advancing surgical skills and would be interested in exploring ways to expand access to this for BSGE members.
I support the BSGE’s objective to improve and promote training in minimal access surgery. I have experience advocating for trainees and incorporating feedback to help ensure meaningful change is made. Through my roles as a departmental trainee representative, feeding back to the consultant body, and also as part of a hospital wide team listening to the views of resident doctors, I contributed to changes aimed at improving working conditions and the training environment.
I am motivated to support the BSGE in improving awareness of training pathways, educational opportunities, and resources available to junior trainees. I think it is particularly important to engage with those who may not otherwise interact with the society early in their careers.
This role would allow me to contribute meaningfully to trainee development using the skills I’ve already acquired while also developing my own skills in leadership in order to make sure your voice is heard.
Claudia Tye
Having been an active member of the endometriosis CNS BSGE subcommittee, I am excited to have the opportunity to stand as the council representative in these elections.
I began as an endometriosis CNS in 2014 at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London and was promoted to advanced nurse practitioner in 2023. I am also a nurse hysteroscopist and menopause specialist and hold post graduate qualifications in counselling and psychotherapy.
I believe passionately in the unique value of specialist nurses within the endometriosis multidisciplinary team. During my time on the subcommittee, I have been instrumental in improving recognition of the role, ensuring that the nurse’s voice is heard, and embracing the enthusiasm and commitment the BSGE has for valuing and providing support for nurses.
I have worked alongside Gilly MacDonald and the subcommittee to provide high quality education events, webinars, and introduce a mentorship network. We have ensured clear expectations are embedded in centre requirements, particularly related to AFC banding, time and support. We introduced the popular BSGE Endometriosis CNS innovation award last year.
Ultimately, I believe that by listening to each nurse, encouraging and valuing the wisdom that each can share through their own unique and expert knowledge, is how we can grow together and continue to provide the best care possible for our patients. I have long been a strong advocate of the nurse’s voice and hope to have the opportunity to represent the nurses on the BSGE council for this next term.
Kerry Mitchell
