Study Day - Cardiff

Invitation for opinion leaders in operative hysteroscopy:
A study day on outpatient resection of fibroids and polyps
(NO CHARGE supported by the Health Foundation)
Cardiff 23rd March 2012

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in conjunction with the Welsh Institute of Women’s Health supported by the Health Foundation.

The Health Foundation Shine 2010 project :
Outpatient operative hysteroscopy with conventional re-useable equipment: a cost effective alternative to day case theatre. Assessment of effectiveness, patient acceptability and comparative health economics.

This project (using glycine for uterine irrigation) has been completed and its findings are now embedded in service delivery in Cardiff. The work has been presented at ESGE and AAGL and has generated considerable interest. The next phase is to see if this work is transferable to other units and we invite teams who have an interest in developing resection of fibroids and polyps in their outpatient treatment clinics to attend a study day in Cardiff on 23rd March.

The objective of the day is to examine the pathway we have taken to develop this innovative cost effective service. The pathway of care, quality assurance and economics of this model of treatment will be presented to provide support to colleagues wishing to consider whether this approach is suitable for their units circumstances. To this end we are looking for teams consisting of consultant, lead outpatient procedure nurse and business manager (loose definitions). The consultant should have experience and be confident in the use of the resectoscope under general anaesthetic, the nurse should be keen on developing service improvements but a theatre background is not necessary. The attendance of a manager is not mandatory but is advisable to facilitate driving change. The teams may come from hospitals who already have an outpatient operative hysteroscopy service or who are wishing to develop one.

The day will run from 10.00 – 16.00 and will include a practical introduction to theatre skills for operative hysteroscopy for nurses and an opportunity to modify a model business case for managers and consultants. Alternatives to monopolar resection will be considered and a senior Health Foundation representative will be present and will speak on change management. Support for early adopters in the form of policies, protocols and local attendance will be provided if requested.
