MSc Endoscopic Surgery

BSGE/ University of Surrey - MSc Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy

The MSc in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy is run through a partnership between the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) and the Postgraduate Medical School.
The programme provides gynaecologists with a firm theoretical background in diagnostic and operative gynaecological endoscopy in combination with the development of clinical competence in operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy.

The applicant should be a gynaecologist with experience in gynaecological endoscopy, such as a specialist registrar or consultant (or overseas equivalent) and be competent in both written and spoken English. Applicants in training posts are required to have an approved preceptor before they can be accepted onto the programme.

The programme is specifically designed to help develop:

  • Clinical Skills in advanced endoscopy
  • A critical understanding of the evidence underpinning the principles of gynaecological endoscopy
  • The ability to offer an evidence-based effective and professional gynaecological endoscopy service
The MSc is run on a modular basis, allowing you to complete some or the entire programme. It is designed to fit well with both the intermediate and advanced ATSM. The postgraduate certificate mirrors both the academic and practical requirements of the ATSM but at an academically more rigorous level, and the postgraduate diploma offers appropriate training for the advanced ATSM.
The MSc offers a rigorous theoretical and practical training, using the facilities of the MATTU to equip you with the skills you need to be a safe and thoughtful endoscopic surgeon. It has proved very valuable to consultants as well as those in the later training grades. By undertaking the MSc, those in consultant grades have found it helpful in giving them the authority and skills to develop a minimal access service in their trusts.

As we move into an era where all adnexal surgery for benign disease and increasing amounts of uterine surgery is either laparoscopic or vaginal, the MSc allows you to evaluate these changes, understand the risks and benefits and helps you develop the practical skills to undertake this surgery safely for the benefit of your patients and the NHS trusts. Although not many practitioners will go on to undertake surgery for recto-vaginal endometriosis, at least early on in their career, you can expect to treat early endometriosis and utero-sacral nodular disease. The MSc helps you develop these skills and also ensures that you are competent to assess and undertake laparoscopic and laparoscopically assisted uterine surgery.

Both the Clinical Director, Professor Jeremy Wright; jeremy.wright@surrey.ac.uk and the Academic Director, Dr Karen Ballard; k.ballard@surrey.ac.uk would be happy to have an informal discussion with you either by telephone or on ‘Skype’ prior to your application.
